Malaysian born free running athlete, Abudi Alsagoff, who has a mix bloodline of Arab, Malay and Chinese. He is one of the professional free runner/parkour artists from Malaysia. He shares with us his journey on how started to persuade parkour and free running as his career

INTRODUCE YOURSELF?

Hey! My name is Abudi Alsagoff. I’m 26 and I’m a free runner!

WHAT IS PARKOUR TO YOU AND HOW DO YOU REPRESENT IT IN YOUR OWN WAY?

Parkour is to move as fast and as efficient as possible from one point to the other. To me, parkour is the art of movement. It’s functional fitness and enables you to move in an efficient way, developing your mindset on how you see this world differently. The world becomes your playground.

WHEN AND HOW DID YOU START BUILDING A PASSION FOR FREERUNNING AND PARKOUR?

It was about 10 years ago when I first discovered it and know what it’s called. I saw a YouTube video about it once, and fell in love immediately. I’m sure all of us have been jumping and climbing around as a kid not knowing what it was.

 

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE FOR YOU TO MAKE YOUR FIRST EVER JUMP AND WHAT WAS THE FEELING?

Not long after discovering it, I asked a friend of mine who knew a group of guys that did parkour back then. I met up with them for a training session and in that same session I had learned a few moves! It felt incredible and you feel so free. I’d say it’s the closest feeling to flying.

 

HAVE YOU EVER FACED ANY SEVERE INJURIES WHILE DOING FREERUNNING/PARKOUR? WHAT WHERE THEY?

Oh yes. Of course, like in any other sports, injuries are part of the game. I have sprained my ankle and teared my knee meniscus and recently ruptured my ACL ligament!

IS THERE A CERTAIN KIND OF ESSENTIAL TRAINING OR BODY FITNESS TRAINING REQUIRED WHEN IT COMES TOWARDS THIS SPORT? WHAT WOULD YOU SUGGEST FOR THAT?

Strength training is essential and also acts as“supplement” training. You can do weighted training to get stronger. But body weight training is also enough. When you are doing parkour itself, I believe it is also a training to strengthen your physical body.

WHICH IS ONE OF YOUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO ENJOY THIS SPORT? WHY?

I would say Santorini Island in Greece is the best place so far. Just because the spots are literally everywhere. So many possibilities!

WHAT YOUR BIGGEST ACHIEVEMENT OR BIGGEST JUMP THAT YOU HAVE EVER DONE? HOW DID YOU FEEL?

Would prefer to answer a different question. I think the philosophy in Parkour is not about the biggest jump or biggest move, but more on challenging yourself. Hence, I never actually remembered the biggest jump I have done. But of course, when you faced your fear, and successfully completed a challenge, you feel amazing knowing you have conquered your fear and able to do it after knowing you could do the move.

WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU LOVE TO GIVE TO THE UPCOMING FREE RUNNERS AND PARKOURRISTS OUT THERE?

Always stay safe, don’t take any unnecessary risks and if possible, train with someone who can guide you properly. Take your time and enjoy the movement!
