The music festival story of 2017 wasn’t Beyoncé pulling out of Coachella but instead focused on the cancelled Fyre Festival. Just last month, after nearly a year of federal investigations, Billy McFarland, the founder of the festival, pleaded guilty to two counts of wire fraud for roughly $26 million USD which could lead to him being put behind bars for up to 40 years.
Netflix released a trailer for its newest documentary, one that goes behind-the-scenes to discover what really went down at the doomed Fyre Festival event from last year. A lot of the trailer focuses on the event’s co-founder, Billy McFarland, who was convicted of fraud following the festival’s fallout and is currently serving six years in prison.
The documentary showcases several interviews that delve into how McFarland gained investments by making false claims and assurances he couldn’t keep. His lies ended up garnering support from models like Bella Hadid, Emily Ratajkowski and Hailey Baldwin for the mysteriously high-class event, as well as securing Ja Rule as an organizer.
We also get a look at the island event itself, which featured piles of mattresses in the rain, shocked reactions of attendees touching down for the first time, and first-hand depictions of the Lord of Flies-esque mayhem that ensued.
